Welcome to CMD-IT's Innovation Solutions Challenge!
How can we address our country's biggest social issues with technology? Is there a technical solution to every issue? Or is there a way we use technology to support needed change in the country?
United Nations Foundation Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) are the world’s shared plan to end extreme poverty, reduce inequality, and protect the planet by 2030. Addresses the world's problems with. Global perspective to Local Impact, what solutions can you design to address these SDGs?
Just a few questions to spark your thinking on how you would approach creating social positive change through innovative solutions with challenges we have in the US or in your local community. With COVID-19, racial, social and economic injustice, we have our pick these days to put on our solutions cap and get to work.
What are some of the biggest challenges we have today?
COVID-19, hit the world pretty hard and fast and the world was unprepared, and so was the economy. How do we use technology to address some of the financial challenges in parallel with putting health and safety first? Is there better ways to support financial markets globally if and when we are hit with another pandemic? How do we prepare to maximize savings today so that families and companies are not strained financially? Governments were so unprepared to support healthcare workers so how do we improve supply chain logistics to ease the burden of identifying stock piles of PPEs and get them to designated hospitals that need them the most?
Education moved online. All of it. We are maxing out the infrastructure because everyone was online throughout the day. Webinars, Zoom meetings, Birthday celebrations, dance competitions on social media, and so much more. How do we improve the infrastructure, cloud computing and technology to sustain and support the enormous Internet traffic? Many public school districts were unprepared to support virtual schools because either technology failed them or the assumption that students in low-income households had a computer at home. How do we help the school administrators, teachers, parents and students to keep education going regardless if they're online or in-person?
Standing Against Racial injustice was brought to the forefront in a devastating way. George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery all within a week lost their lives because of police brutality and the ugly racism in United States. The Black Lives Matter movement touched many of us in our communities. There was so much anger and frustrated felt among many Americans that spanned a global movement. How do we support organizations that are working toward equality and equity economically and socially? So many documents sharing and resource sharing, is there a way we can use AI/ML to sift through all of these posts being shared and collect them in one area? Mobile devices have proved to be incredibly useful in revealing the hidden truths and social media has been a way for community organizers to mobilize volunteers. Are there other devices/apps/infrastructure that can support organizations in their work?
Just a few food for thought. You don't have to use the above, but the issues has revealed how much work we need to do to prepare for the future.
There are so many issues today and YOU are the problem solvers of right now! Think about how you are using your Computing education to change the world in a positive way.
