Retinaid is an android application (wireframe) which broadly aims at providing assistance to patients suffering from the eye diseases Retinitis Pigementosa (RP) or Vitreous Haemorrhage (VH).
VH is the appearance of spots or floaters causing blurring of normal vision. These blots or floaters are nothing but blood flowing into the vitreous material of the eye which causes a blockage in the vision.
Whereas, RP is a group of eye diseases leading to damage of photoreceptor cells of the retina. It is an inherent disorder caused by gene mutations sending faulty messages to the retinal cells.
My mother, also a teammate in this project is a patient of vitreous haemorrhage suffering since past 5 years. She is the main motivation for me to develop this application (wireframe).
Retinaid presents many options for the users suffering from the above mentioned disease/condition as given below:
Retinaid Magnifier: This feature of the application aims at providing a magnifier for the host android device through which each and every application residing on the device is made usable (and visible) to the user.
Scan and View: The Scan and View feature is a unique one in this application in the sense that it can scan and view text documents from the hard copy to the screen of the application. This required OCR as well as proper magnification of the text presented on the screen to be visible. This feature uses the camera of the host android device.
Retinaid Camera: The camera of the android device running Retinaid is used to view the surroundings of the user in a magnified form so that the user (the patient) is able to see them in a proper manner.
Retinaid Navigation: This feature is one of the most important features of the application. Tied up with any navigation providing app on the host device, this feature provides a magnified and speech based clear navigation system to enable the user to navigate around easily.
Audio Assistance: The audio assistance feature provides the user with text-to-speech conversion in either English or Hindi (native language of India). This way the tricky text regions can be understood by the user without undertaking much pressure.
The Retinaid app, in its entirety presents a unique way to assist and provide help to the patients suffering from unclear or gradual loss of vision through its various features as presented above. The documents and test files attached with the project present a very naive wireframe (prototype) of the application. We are currently working on the real application to be deployed soon.
